Homebirth with a Midwife

My homebirth services include unhurried, compassionate and comprehensive care that continues through pregnancy, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding. You can call 24/7 with your concerns or questions. Each mother and family is unique, and my care will be tailored to your specific needs.

The Initial Consultation
This meeting is always free-of-charge and without any obligation. There is no right or wrong time for a consultation. I have had clients who called me as soon as they found out they were pregnant, while others were late or even very late transfers of care from other maternity care providers. The Consultation allows you to find out if our personalities are a good match, and get all of your questions answered. I get a first impression of your preferences and ideals for your pregnancy and birth, and can provide you with information or  resources, depending on your needs.

Homebirth Midwifery Services
Midwifery care in Montana is a long standing tradition of trust, close relationships, and respecting client choice. Most women are great candidates for homebirth, including most mothers seeking VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). Once you have decided that you would like to work with me, my care generally includes, but is not limited, to these services:

In the Prenatal Period
·         regular relaxed prenatal visits in my office, lasting usually around an hour, with standard physical exam, nutritional
counseling, and ample time to discuss choices in your care and answer all of your questions
·         no limit on the number of prenatal appointments; we will schedule to meet your needs
·         older siblings are welcome at prenatal visits, they love to help the midwife!
·         the home visit at around 36 weeks, in preparation for your birth
·         ordering any of the necessary lab work, ultrasounds and other tests that you choose
·         childbirth education to supplement your own preparation, and access to extensive educational resources

For Your Birth
·         attending your labor and birth, with a qualified second provider whom you will have met during prenatal care
·         all medical and disposable supplies needed during your birth
·         for a water birth, inflatable tub and all equipment and supplies needed
·         all herbs, homeopathic remedies and prescription medications that may be needed, including drugs to control
          hemorrhage
·         providing oxygen for mother and baby if needed
·         suturing supplies and surgical repair, if needed

After Your Birth
·         standard postpartum care – a first home visit around 36 hours, and a second home visit on day 3 or 4; follow-up home
or office visits as needed to ensure the mother’s healing, and breastfeeding ease
·         informational and emotional support for the new mother and new family
·         the final postpartum visit with well-woman exam and family planning counseling

Newborn Care
·         initial newborn exam
·         offering erythromycin eye ointment and Vitamin K for baby at birth; parents may decline either or both
·         newborn bloodspot screening and newborn screening for CCHD (Critical Congenital Heart Defect) will be done at first
postpartum home visit, around 36 hours of age
·         personalized breastfeeding evaluation and help, as little or as much as you and your baby need (I am a Certified Lactation
          Counselor)
·         information about any topics of interest to you, such as newborn jaundice, attachment parenting and baby-wearing,
          cloth diapering, and more

Acupuncture
As a midwife I have found acupuncture to be a safe and wonderfully effective treatment for the moms I work with. This is why I include in my service package up to three sessions with an expert acupuncturist who specializes in care for women before, during, and after childbirth.

Cost
My total fee for all of the above homebirth services is currently $4,900.

Insurance
If you have health insurance I will make every effort to help you obtain reimbursement for costs related to my services. Unfortunately, Medicaid will not at present reimburse for homebirth midwifery care.
